Benalmádena opts for almost 13 million from European recovery funds

The City Council will opt for a total of 12,840,963 euros from the various European Recovery Funds, launched in response to the crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic.

The European Recovery Fund is endowed with 750,000 million euros. Spain has 140,000 million, 72,700 in grants and 67,300 in loans,  both from public-private collaboration formulas and through participation in projects promoted by the various public administrations.

“Accessing these recovery funds will allow us to progress more quickly and efficiently towards the city model that Benalmádena needs, in which sustainable development and the quality of life of citizens prevail, in addition to becoming a more competitive tourist destination, thus promoting the creation of employment and wealth for the city ”, has valued the mayor, Víctor Navas.

Within the framework of the aforementioned Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, Benalmádena is opting for five calls for different aid programs.

Tourism Sustainability Plan

Of all the calls for applications, the one that collects the largest amount would be the one corresponding to the implementation of the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan, for which a total of 8,245,000 euros in aid has been requested.

“The plan includes a total of 19 actions based on the four axes established by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, and seeks to position the town as a first-rate international coastal destination, in addition to advocating for sustainable tourism, making us in the Green Lung of the Costa del Sol ”, explained the mayor.

The Tourism Sustainability Plan has been fed by the citizen participation website, where various proposals were presented. All ideas were analyzed and presented to businessmen from the tourism sector who attended a participatory session, where the 19 actions proposed to improve the quality of Benalmadan tourism were collected.

The plan, which would have a term of execution of three years, it must be integrated into a territorial program to develop sustainable tourism, after undergoing evaluation by the Ministry and the Junta de Andalucía, which will check the quality of the proposals and verify their alignment with the axes that were marked.

The four axes on which the 19 actions would be structured would be: Green and sustainable transition, Improvement of energy efficiency, Digital transition and Competitiveness of the destination.

Among the actions included in the plan will be highlighted the creation and promotion of a large green corridor that allows the development of a link between the entire territory of Benalmádena, improvement of accessibility to the beaches, electric recharging points for automotive and personal vehicles, development of a new tourism web portal o the rehabilitation of the stretch of coastal path between Torrequebrada and Yucas.

“Our objective is none other than to work to improve the tourism model that we have and turn it into a sustainable one that values ​​our heritage and our city with a view to the future,” Navas stressed.

Program for the implementation of low emission zones

Another of the calls that the City Council would opt for would be the aid program for municipalities for the implementation of low-emission zones and the digital and sustainable transformation of urban transport. “Within this program we have requested a total of 2,880,000 euros to co-finance the infrastructure management project on Avenida Antonio Machado, which would have a total cost of 3,200,000 euros,” announced the mayor.

Program for the strengthening of commercial activity

Within the so-called Aid Program for the strengthening of commercial activity in tourist areas, the City Council has requested a total of 1.324.363 euros to contribute to the financing of the project forpromote the commercial activity and tourist attraction of Arroyo de la Miel, an initiative that would involve a global investment of 1,596,704 euros.

Support to markets and commercial urban areas

The city will also be eligible for the aid program to support markets, commercial urban areas, non-sedentary commerce and short marketing channels. “For these funds we will request 191,600 euros for the program of actions for the commercial improvement of the Arroyo de la Mielarea of ​​the municipality of Benalmádena, an initiative that would have a total investment of 284,020 euros,” the mayor has advanced.

Local action plans of the Spanish Urban Agenda

Finally, Benalmádena will participate in the request for aid for the preparation of pilot projects for local action plans of the Spanish urban agenda. “For this line of aid we have requested 200,000 euros for the elaboration of the Urban Agenda of Benalmádena“, Navas pointed out.
