The Mayor and Councilor for Tourism of the Benalmádena City Council, Víctor Navas, during the second day of the Fitur 2022 Tourism Fair today, held a series of professional meetingsto promote from the local Administration a series of projects of tourist interest for the municipality.
The remodeling of the Costa de Benalmádena that is planned to be developed through the DUSI Strategy subsidized with European funds has been one of the initiatives thathas been presented in the different meeting forums held by local political representatives and companies in the tourism sector.
In this way, the mayor has taken advantage of his presence at Fitur to meetwith the CEO of Best Hotels, Ramón Vernet; and the president of Best Hotels, David Batalla, a tourist group that has three hotels in Benalmádena: Tritón, Siroco and Best.
During this meeting, the Siroco hotel expansion project was discussed, which those responsible hope to undertake at the end of the 2022 tourist season.
The mayor has expressed the commitment of the municipal government to streamline the procedures to facilitate the development of an important project for the renovation of the hotel plant, with an estimated cost of around 18 million euros.
On the other hand, from the group Best Hotels “have shown their support for the Antonio Machado avenue remodeling project”, which they consider “essential for the progress and improvement of the coastline“, although they have demanded that the works begin at the end of the tourist season, thus coinciding with the expansion works of the Tritón hotel.
Navas has also met with the Director of Operations for City Sightseeingon the Costa del Sol, Luis Miguel Labrado. It is one of the most important tourist bus companies at an international level, with a presence in the main tourist destinations around the world.
According to the mayor, “we have tackled various projects to improve the service currently offered in Benalmádena, which we hope to announce shortly”.
During the meeting withCity Sightseeing, Navas communicated the latest details about the ambitious remodeling and expansion project of Antonio Machado Avenue. Luis Miguel Labrado has expressed the group’s support for this initiative, which he has valued “as the future for Benalmádena Costa due to the quality and well-being that it will bring to residents and visitors”.
In addition, the mayor also took the opportunity to meet with the commercial director of Halcón Viajesin Málaga and Melilla, Luis González, with the aim of signing a tourism promotion agreement.
“The objective of the agreement is to promote the Benalmádena destination in the offices of Viajes Halcón and Viajes Ecuador”, explained Navas.
The actions to be carried out, as specified by the mayor, consist of the presence of Benalmádena in the windows of more than 500 offices of Halcón Viajesand Viajes Ecuador, as well as specific training on the destination forall sales staff.
For his part, the commercial director of this company announced that “we are working on carrying out a future fam tripwith professionals from the sector”.
PP creates a technical Forum
Coinciding with the presence of the mayor in Fitur and the promotion of, among other projects of tourist interest, the remodeling that is planned to be carried out on the Benalmadena coast, the president of the PP, Enrique Moya, together with the vice-president and municipal spokesman, Juan Antonio Lara; have reported on the creation of the Forum for Mobility, a technical advisory body for the work of this party, which will have as its main objective “work on the alternative project to the single lane in Benalmádena Costa”.
It should be remembered that the local government, among other measures to give prominence to pedestrians, is committed to a reorganization of the four existing lanes to incorporate roads for public transport and services, as well as another lane for new mobility(bicycles and non-polluting vehicles).
According to the PP, “this initiative promoted by the popular comes to respond to the clamor of the citizenry that is contrary to the reduction of two lanes in the main artery of the coast and that has considerably worsened the mobility and quality of life of the resident neighbors. on the coast”.
This forum will be coordinated by Sandra Hilinger, active architect and quantity surveyor, resident of Benalmádena Costa, who will lead a work table that will include the contributions of professionals in different fields (urban planning, public works, environment, traffic, mobility, transport) , as well as groups and neighbors with the aim of improve the coastal strip, but, as the PP underlines, “maintaining the four lanes responding to the generalized requests of the population”.
In this sense, note that citizens who reject a new reorganization of traffic are united on a virtual platform, as highlighted, “transversal and apolitical”, whose representatives have held meetings with different provincial and regional political representatives, as well as with the Andalusian Ombudsman in search of their support with some action or mediation in the case of the latter.
However, to date these citizens have not received any real action from these Administrations and public representatives, since although from the PP it was announced that the demand of these neighbors would be taken through a motion that would be raised to the provincial plenary session last December, for reasons unknown to this medium, the promise ultimately failed to materialize.
The opposition groups (Cs, PP and Vox) on the other hand, have been transferring different questions and motions regarding this project to the municipal plenary session.
As for the recent meetings held by the hotel, economic and commercial associations of the city with the City Council, these entities defend the inclusion of a series of commitments in the project-more parking, traffic flow, increase in public transport, among others- but none showed their rejection of the reduction of lanes for road traffic on Antonio Machado avenue and in this sense, the only change they claimed focused on the location in the opposite direction to the planned one, of the projected new bus lane.
