TheInnovabuilding (Park of Innovation and Youth Initiative) turns 10 years old. This center stands as a municipal commitment to information and communication technologies as a way to stimulate youth participation in communion with factors such as entrepreneurship and creativity.
Innova is a public space open to all young people from Benalmadena, a plural, democratic and participatory place that generates processes of social participation with the aim of encouraging youth to become active and critical citizens.
In 1989, the sociologist Ray Oldenburg published the book The Great Good Place, in which he exposed the concept of “third place.” Oldenburg defended the need for a “social third place” that complemented the family (first place) and the work place (second place). In his opinion, it was necessary to build a social space where lasting relationships can be fostered with other people in the immediate environment, which, after all, would be the heart of the social vitality of a community. The Centro Innovahas earned in this decade that label then, there is no doubt that it is a clear example of this “third place ”of which the American sociologist spoke, insofar as it is a multidisciplinary space in which the youth of Benalmádena connect with each other, regardless of their ages and concerns, while relating to entrepreneurship, training, creativity, technology and with different cultures.
Thus, in addition to offer young people from Benalmadena a space in which to develop your proposals and both recreational and educational meetings,it also puts at your disposal workshops, seminars or conferencesand gives them the opportunity to meet and network, opening up to other different groups, other experiences and opportunities. They also guide them on aspects related to emancipation, housing or employment.
Also, as indicated on the institutional website, for more than 10 years, it has maintained the Young Space of Benalmádena Pueblo with a clear educational vocation and has a Associations premises in the old Youth House, where they offer different groups and associations shared spaces for their meetings and activities.
In the same way, it houses numerous young companies so that they can develop their business activity and, at the same time, have advice, training and dissemination of their services or products.
Young people can also use this building to study, meet or have fun practicing urban leisure activities such as skateboarding, bmx, climbing or rollerblading. Along these lines, a few weeks ago a tennis table was incorporated, which adds to the activities already offered such as aero flamenco, cross training, salsa or capoeira, -whose athletes have recently participated in a championship in Bilbao-, and at that can be accessed in this youth center.
Its location almost in front of the Arroyo de la Miel Public Library, in which there are thematic spaces aimed at youth such as the Comic Library, a section for video games, films or youth literature, or a few steps from Parque de la Paloma, one of the great green lungs of Benalmádena where the environment with the development of cultural activities, it also stands as an added advantage for users of the Edificio Innova.
