The Citizen Platform No to the Single Lane of Benalmádena, which now has almost 4,000 members, has announced that on the 30th it will take to the streets of the city again to show its rejection of the project to reorganize traffic in Benalmádena Costa, projected by the local government team, and financed by European funds within the Sustainable Development Strategy (Edusi).
The demonstration will be on foot, and will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Castillo de El Bil-Bil, it will run along Avenida Alay to the roundabout of the Port, to end at Plaza Solymar. The organizers wanted to invite “all residents to participate in this call, which will be the second of all we have to do to make them listen to us.”
This citizen movement was born this summer due to the daily traffic jams that caused the launch of the pilot test by the City Council regarding the restriction of lanes for road traffic on Avenida Antonio Machado. After the demonstration held in September, meetings with the political groups of the city and the result of the last plenary session, in which the motions of Cs and PP in relation to possible alternatives to the modification in the programmed use for the four traffic lanes, the neighborhood platformdoes not give up and has decided to continue with its claim in the hope of starting a rectification from the rulers and “putting an end to the continuous traffic jams in Benalmádena Costa”.
It should be remembered that the government team wants to reorganize traffic in the area and although it proposes to maintain the four lanes, their use will be different from what they have been given so far. Thus, in the direction Benalmádena-Fuengirola one would be for normal traffic, and another reserved for bus and taxi, and in the Torremolinos direction, one would be left for normal traffic, and another lane for new mobility: bicycle and non-polluting vehicles.
The residents that make up this “apolitical and transversal” platform see “a single road for normal traffic unfeasible because traffic jams continue” and that today there is no flow of tourists in Benalmádena that was experienced in summer and that, according to the local government, accentuated the problem of road traffic “because they came in their vehicles because of the pandemic.”
The public platform has been joined by the taxi sector, and a large part of the service sector in the area, as well as neighbors from neighboring towns who go daily to Benalmádena to work. They also have the support of opposition groups and in this regard, while PP and Vox they support that the avenue remains, as the neighbors claim, as up to now as far as traffic regulation is concerned, Ciudadanos proposes to maintain the four lanes “but leaving two of them for services, and that they can be left open and can be modified for regulation in clear moments of high vehicle traffic in order to avoid traffic jams.” Both the platform and the opposition agree that the median of palm trees that runs along the avenue and that they plan to transplant to another location should not be lost.
The citizen platform has been stating that it wants the integral remodeling of the Coast to be carried out but they do not share the planning of the Government team regarding the reorganization of traffic because, they insist that “it is blocking Antonio Machado Avenue”, and also They denounce that the traffic that does not circulate on this avenue “has moved north, the only exit to the highway has collapsed”.
Likewise, they understand that “the single lane is also a problem in terms of safety because firefighters, ambulances and police are also trapped in the caravans of vehicles”, as well as a damage to the environment since “the retentions cause more accumulations of CO2 ”, and highlight“ the damage that the commercial and business fabric of the area is suffering ”.
Actions taken by neighbors
The citizen platform No to the single lane of Benalmádena requested a few days ago, through the municipal registry, both the project, as well as all the reports on it, and also, it has transferred “the problem that the neighbors have been suffering” to different organizations. Thus, he has sent a registered letter with all the information to the general director of the fundsEdusi from the Ministry of Finance of the central government, the general director of European funds in the Junta de Andalucía, the councilor of Finance Junta de Andalucía, the secretary general of the Regional PSOE, as well as the president and secretary of the provincial committee of this party in Málaga and to the secretary of the Provincial Municipal Policy of Málaga.
In the same way, they have reported that they will hold conversations with the Association of Hotel Entrepreneurs of the Costa del Sol (Aehcos) and with the Benalmádena Merchants and Entrepreneurs Association (Aceb) and they have also sent a joint letter to the Defensor del Pueblo Andaluz, as requested by this body after receiving numerous private complaints from residents of the town and neighboring cities regarding the, in their opinions, “harmful” consequences that the reorganization of traffic in Benalmádena Costa has brought with it.
