The first cinema forum of the Ateneo Libre y Más Madera opens with the documentary ‘El fin de ETA’

The mayor of Benalmádena, Víctor Navas; and the Councilor for Culture, Pablo Centella, presented this morning a new cultural activity in the city, a cinema-forum that was born from the collaboration between two important Benalmadan cultural groups: the Ateneo Libre de Benalmádena and the Más Madera cinema-club. The first cinema-forum jointly organized by these cultural entities will be organized around the documentary ‘The end of ETA’, and will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, November 24 at 7:00 p.m. at the Casa de la Cultura.

The presentation was attended by the protagonists of the cinema-forum, the former socialist leader in the Basque Country and a key figure in the process of ending the terrorist gang, Jesús Eguiguren; and the journalist from El País, Luis R. Aizpeolea;together with the organizers of the activity, the president of the Ateneo Libre de Benalmádena, Jesús Lobillos; and the president of the Más Madera cinema-club, Enrique Garrido.

“We are delighted to receive Jesús Eguiguren and Luis R. Aizpeolea in Benalmádena, two figures with a great career and a vital experience that will enrich this forum of intellectual knowledge that is the Ateneo Libre de Benalmádena”, said the mayor, who He positively valued the opportunity that this cinema forum offers to citizens to delve into one of the most important historical events in Spain in recent times.

“The knowledge and learning that an event of these characteristics offers us helps us to move towards a better society, and who knows if tomorrow we will have to apply this experience to face any other territorial conflict,” said the mayor, who has congratulated the cinema-club and the athenaeum for their activity.

For his part, Eguiguren stated that “we are very happy to be offered this opportunity and to have this welcome. The peace process initially had its detractors and their supporters, but as time has passed itthe truth has been laid down: ETA ended forever, there have been no more attacks, altercations or splits, being the best imaginable way to put an end to the armed gang ”.

“We think that the peace process has not been sufficiently recognized by certain sectors, but this type of act makes us see that this recognition is growing over the years,” said the former leader of the PSE.

“On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the peace process, the Basque Country is hosting numerous commemorative acts and ceremonies, and reality is being assumed with absolute naturalness,” stressed  Eguiguren.

On the other hand, according to the journalist Luis Aizpeolea, “Jesús Eguiguren is going to be one of the figures that will go down in history not only in the Basque Country, but also in Spain, for being the one who took the first steps to put an end to the ETA problem ”.

The journalist, who has also valued the important police and judicial work that led to the end of the terrorist gang’s activity, pointed out that “in El País we saw the importance of narrating the end of ETA terrorism to face the important campaign orchestrated from the media right against the peace process ”.

In relation to this collaboration between the Más Madera cinema-club and the Ateneo Libre de Benalmádena, both groups announced that it will be the first of many more joint initiatives of this nature.

“The projection of this film is part of the program of the Ateneo Libre de Benalmádena: this is how we take another step towards our goal, which is none other than cultural dissemination,” said Jesús Lobillos.

The president of the cultural entity stressed that “as we do with any matter that we address,we choose as speakers those figures who can provide us with the truth of the facts, and in this case we are delighted to have the presence of Jesús Eguiguren and Luis R. Aizpeolea ”.
